چکیده

Background Immune suppression is one of the hallmarks by which head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) develops a tumor permissible environment[1]. Semaphorin 4D (Sema4D), known for its various developmental, physiological and pathological effects, was recently shown to play a role in regulating the immune system[2]. Sema4D is expressed in many epithelial tumors including HNSCC[3]; yet, the effect of Sema4D on modulating the inflammatory profile within the tumor microenvironment of HNSCC remains to be elucidated.

Semaphorin 4D in human head and neck cancer tissue and peripheral blood: A dense fibrotic peri-tumoral stromal phenotype

The search for stromal biomarkers in carcinoma patients is a challenge in the field. Semaphorin 4D (Sema4D), known for its various developmental, physiological and pathological effects, plays a role in pro and anti-inflammatory responses. It is expressed in many epithelial tumors including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Recently, we found that HNSCC-associated Sema4D modulates a...

Inflammation-induced myeloid-derived suppressor cells associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to present our assessment of the significance of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). METHODS We examined the percentage of MDSCs in the peripheral blood of patients with HNSCC. The relationship among MDSC recruitment, tumor progression, and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibition was also evaluated by an...

Combined modality radiation therapy promotes tolerogenic myeloid cell populations and STAT3-related gene expression in head and neck cancer patients

Immunomodulation contributes to the antitumor efficacy of the fractionated radiation therapy (RT). Here, we describe immune effects of RT with concurrent systemic cisplatin or cetuximab treatment of patients with stage III-IV head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Using longitudinally collected blood samples, we identified significant changes in cytokines/chemokines and immune cell popu...

Density of mast-cells and Microvessels Density in head and neck cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Background and Aim: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) is the second most common skin cancer. Mast cells may play a role in tumor progression and metastasis by increasing angiogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of mast cells by increasing angiogenesis in invasion of head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional stud...

STAT3 regulates arginase-I in myeloid-derived suppressor cells from cancer patients.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) play a key immunosuppressive role in various types of cancer, including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). In this study, we characterized CD14+HLA-DR(-/lo) cells sorted from the tumors, draining lymph nodes, and peripheral blood of HNSCC patients. CD14+HLA-DR(-/lo) cells were phenotyped as CD11b+, CD33+, CD34+, arginase-I+, and ROS+. In all 3...
